I'm running OSX 10.5.4, and I somehow turned on a feature that puts a black highlight box around a component of whatever item/window I have selected. I have no idea how I turned it on and I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to turn it off.

Cat did it.
Go to System Preferences > Universal Access and turn voice-over off.

Cat probably did do it, the bugger. That worked; thanks!

I knew you had a cat! ;)

Glad to solve the mystery for you. And the cat comment was quite serious.
