Well, the why is pretty simple. Do you want to make DVD movies? Do you have huge files you'd like to get off your computer? If yes to either of those, you want a DVD burner.

As for who, what, where, etc, you get a little more complex. Is it important that the burner be an internal one, or would you be ok with one that plugs into your iBook with a cord?

Is price an issue? Do you have multiple computers that you would want to use the burner with?

I'm just throwing out some questions to get some background info. Other members will be better suited for actual model/brand suggestions once you reply.

In that case, you have a ton of options. I'd google "mac compatible DVD burner." You'll get a ton of hits, and in that price range, you will easily be able to find something.

LaCie is a good brand. I have two of their drives and I have had no problems.

I have the Lacie Porsche Design 16x dual layer burner which is nice...
I'd see if you can find one that comes with mac burning software unless you already have toast...

What i was suprised to find was that my Plextor internal drive, put inside an extremely generic and cheap IDE->USB2 enclosure works like a charm on my iBook.

which lacie model in particular?
I have had it for a long time not sure which model it is. It has two firewire ports and is able to burn DVD-/+Rs and DVD-/+RWs.
