Hey this is my first time posting and I attempted to search the archives, but I didn't run into an exact replica of my problem so I'm hoping someone could help.

My hard drive crashed last week, so I bought a replacement drive (Western digital 320GB) and installed it today. I booted from the installation disk and attempted to partition the new hard drive in order to format it, but I was greeted with the error in the title of this post.

I have all the options correct: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and GUID, so I don't know what could be wrong. Is my new drive just faulty, or am I doing something incorrectly. Thank you for your assistance, I appreciate it.

Welcome to the Mac Forums.

It sounds like you're not using the correct installation disk. Are you sure it's the disk for your machine? If you use a disk from another Mac it won't work.
