Hello,

I want to start developing Mac Applications.

Is it free to create and release Mac Applications or is it required to signup for the Mac Developer Program?

Best have a look here, I think there are 2 tiers of developer, a free version and a yearly subscription where you get pre release builds of the OS

You also don't have to use Apple's tools. In fact, there are five languages (that I know of) that are pre-installed on every Mac - Java, Python, Perl, Ruby and PHP.

If you're looking to distribute apps on the Mac App Store, you'll have to sign up for the developer program for $99/yr. If you don't want to do so, you don't have to join the program.

As for tools, if you want to use Xcode and develop native Mac applications in Objective-C, you'll need to either purchase Xcode 4 from the Mac App Store or use Xcode 3 which should be on your installation discs (I can't remember right now which disc it's on).

Is this the same for developing for iPhone or is the iOS Dev Program required for iPhone development?

Way... way too many specs to list.
iOS is iPhone.. so....

BTW, this is a new scheme..

While I'm thinking about it.. $100/yr is NOTHING to have them effectively handle your marketing.

Apple does not handle your marketing.

Jamesking56,

Your Mac came with an install DVD and it has the Xcode development tools on it. Just install that. You can also sign up for a free account and download for free the latest 3.2.6 version of Xcode. If you have OS 10.6, you can buy Xcode 4 from the Mac App Store for $4.99. If you do spend the $99 for a developer account you can download Xcode 4 for free. The question then would become which developer program would be best for your situation. The iOS or OS X one.

I already read some of his tutorials and I liked it. But now I want to know if the book has a good content, with examples.
