Hi

I've used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable clone of my 2010 MBP on an external drive and I can succesfully boot the 2010 laptop from that.
However I also have a 2011 MBP which won't boot from the drive - the bootup screen with pale grey background and apple logo appears but then just hangs there - the whirrly circle indicating action doesn't appear.

The 2010 MBP had 10.6.4 on it when I purchased it and a bootable clone created from that didn't work with the 2011 version, I've since upgraded to 10.6.7 but still get the same issue.

Any suggestions, are the boot images not compatible?

TIA

The 2010 MBP had 10.5.4 on it when I purchased it and a bootable clone created from that didn't work with the 2011 version, I've since upgraded to 10.5.7 but still get the same issue.

Any suggestions, are the boot images not compatible?

OSX versions are model specific. so osx for a 2010mbp is different than osx for 2011.

The reason it isn't working is because the 2011 MBP require 10.6.6 at least. It can't boot anything below that.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)

Yep, to the OP, if it were the other way around, and you wanted to boot the 2010 MBP with a clone from the 2011 MBP, you would have no problem.
If you were to upgrade the 2010 MBP to SL 10.6.6 and clone it, you could then boot the 2011 MBP from the clone.

I'm sorry that was a typo in my original posting, my 2010 MBP came with 10.6.4 and I've upgraded to 10.6.7 - which ought to be high enough for the 2011 MBP.

Yet the clone taken after upgrading to 10.6.7 still doesn't boot the 2011 MBP. Any other possibilities for it failing to do so?

If that's the case, I have no idea then.

Got me stumped, but, when you boot holding option, is the drive showing up as a bootable source?
If not, I would just try recloning, and going again.

I don't believe you can boot a 2011 MacBook Pro nor a 2011 iMac with anything but the original install media that was shipped with the machine.

Upgrading your 2010 MBP to 10.6.7 and then using a clone of it to boot the 2011 MBP probably is not going to work.

Ahh yes, I recall when I got my my 2010 MBP, I couldn't boot it off my 2007 MB clone running the same OS, however, off memory, I was able to clone from my 2007 MB clone to the 2010 MBP.
I was also able to boot my 2007 MB from the 2010 MBP clone.

I'm guessing it is a driver issue, but as I say, just a guess.

There are additional drivers that are required that are only included with the original installation media. Once lion is released you should be able to go back and forth though (with lion that is).
