Faulty macbook ram slot

Hello there, i have a macbook black 2.4 and one of the ram slots seems to not be working as if i have any ram that slot, i get garbled/distorted video and the system freezes, but when i have any ram in the other 'good' slot it works fine.

If i bought a 4gb ram chip for it, would the machine work ok.

Is there any fixes for the ram slot? (apart from a new logic board obviously)

That's really a strange error. Generally, when a memory module slot is defective it just refuses to recognize that the module is inserted. I've never heard of one causing garbled/distorted video.

I'm wondering if the area on the logic board where the slot is mounted is cracked? A hairline crack could cause some unusual things to occur.

You might be able to use just one slot with a 4 GB module inserted and the other slot empty. And there is no way to fix a defective slot without swapping out the logic board.

Graphics problems being related to ram though not super common is not unheard of.

I think a 4gb stick should be fine but I am not positive.

I think your only option for fixing it would be a logic board swap.

wow, thanks for the fast replies. I have spoken to an ebay seller and they said that this should work. I was wondering if anyone knows if this would work in the good slot i have, as i really want 4gb for my macbook.

That module will not work. Your black MacBook uses the same memory as my MacBook. Here's what you need: LINK

I recommend buying the module from OWC (see link above) as they are Mac specialists and their prices are competitive.

You need DDR2 not DDR3 (unfortunatly this means it will be about 70 dollars instead of ~30). I know your computer can take up to 4gb of ram so unless each slot is limited then any 4gb DDR2 laptopstick stick should do.
