i have no idea what acceptable heat for a 17" MBP. I run FCP a lot on the machine so it's often running hot, but i'm not sure if it's problematically hot. Is there a point over which you run the risk of ruining the longevity of the hard drive?

I've had the CPU up to 100 degrees Celsius. Yes it gets hot but it should be fine unless your laptop has malfunctions. The HDD shouldn't get much hotter than 50 degrees Celsius, mine is 34 degrees Celsius at this moment.

When the machine get's too hot ( a setting defined by the Apple engineers ) it will properly shut itself down.
Just make sure the ventilation is not blocked and the fans will do the rest.

"Hot" means something different for different people :)
