Volume not working no more on my macbook help?

I am new to Mac, more familiar with Windows. Recently my kids were using my mac laptop using headphones, this has effected my volume on my laptop, can only here when using headphones. Also now I have a red light that stays on where the headphones are plugged in. I have shut down the computer and taken out the battery and did a hard boot which used to work but will not anymore. I am sure its a simple fix, I have tried adjusting all volume controls but will not work, can someone give me suggestions on how to fix this?

I fixed the volume on my Mac laptop

I found a thread from the forum here where someone was having a simular problem and I was able to fix the problem. I put a toothpic in the headphone port, wiggled it around and the red light shut off, now working normally, Thanks
