Getting rid of old disk images.

I created some password protected disk images but no longer need them. I deleted all the files in it but the image is still 18GB.

Does anyone know how I can delete the disk image and reallocate the 18GB to the rest of my computer?

I think all you have to do is put them in the trash and then empty the trash. It may require you to enter your password, but not sure about that.

I tried that but it would not allow me to empty the trash.

There is a terminal command to force empty the trash. If you do a search you can probably find it because I've seen it in a thread recently.

The fact that it won't let you empty it may mean some active process is using a file in the trash

As I understand it this isn't a fixed partition, deleting the disk image should release the space.

A disk image is a file. Delete the file and you recover the space.
Make sure the image is unmounted before trying to delete it.
