What all are you trying to do? I take it this is a recent 21.5" iMac?

Since we have absolutely no idea what programs you're running or what it is that you're doing with the machine, any suggestion would be conjecture.

Open your Activity Monitor application (Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor.app) to see if there is anything - program or process - that's using a large or unusual amount of CPU percentage.

Post back.

Sorry to bother you all on this, it was a usage problem with our broadband account which is something we had not experienced before so I did not know
what it felt like to go over your usage.
All sorted now as hubby has upgraded for more.
We all must have been having fun on our new computers. :p
Slightly embarrassed or what! ;D

Don't be embarrassed. I was reading this thread and was thinking of all the things it could be. What it actually turned out to be was among the last things on my mental "list." :)

What a crock that an ISP can do that! I need to call ours to find out what the cap is. :(

Unfortunately, it's becoming more of the norm here in the US for ISPs to cap usage and charge for overages. My FIOS account right now is unlimited but I can foresee that ending as Verizon begins to expand into more cities and areas.
