Can I still work while Disk Utility wipes another HDD?

Mac Pro/ 2.6Ghz Nehalem 4-core/ 6Gb RAM/Snow Leopard
Just wondered if this were possible or even advisable. I hate leaving my machine untouched for hours at a stretch, so obviously I'm hoping for a thumbs up, but I'm inexperienced and thought it wise to ask in the first instance.

Is there any difference between internal and external HDD in this regard? I've an external in my sights just now.

If you are running Disk utility to erase and format the external, let it run.
