A spin-off question from Dad2b's thread

Hi guys, I just read the thread that Dad2b started when he asked what the best software was to clean his system. Many suggested Onyx and recommended that we avoid MacKeeper and Clean My Mac. Unfortunately I have both apps' (MacKeeper and Clean My Mac) trial versions installed. How do I uninstall them? Would a simple drag to the trash do it? Unfortunately I think (though I'm not sure) both apps also have invisible files installed. How can I get rid of them too?

If they don't come with uninstallers, then get AppZapper:

AppZapper - The uninstaller Apple forgot.

This will get rid of any hidden files when you drag the main App to the trash.

Appzapper does not seem to work on CleanMyMac - have at least one report of it leaving behind an item on the menu bar.

I believe MacKeeper has an uninstaller - use it.

The CleanMyMac folks say you need to open the app, go to it's delete app section and then drag the CMM icon from your app folder into it. It will essentially eat itself.

All apps that have an installer, best way is to use it's uninstaller.

Some of these apps that make changes to system level functions are still drag and drop installations, but then ask for your password when you open them or prior to making changes. Always look for uninstallers in these cases.

This is kind of a humorous post when you think about it...a person having difficulty removing "cleaning/maintenance programs" when a purpose of these programs is to remove unwanted programs.

It's like needing a cleaning application to remove a cleaning application!

Thanks for that info Bob, handy to know, and somewhat daft, as Nick points out!

That's a really strange one for sure and doubt any long time Mac users would have figured that one out, since they wouldn't be installing it to begin with.

My guess is that Appzapper might work on it - if you stopped all it's processes, removed it's junk from login items and removed the menu bar icon first.
