When I connect a mini-DVI to composite video/S video adapter to my iMac (mid 2007, intel), my system profile shows that a display connector is connected. I get a composite video signal on my TV.

But when I connect a mini DVI to VGA connector, the system profile says "no display connector). My TV says "no video signal"

Is this normal or is there a problem with the VGA adapter ?

Problem with the adapter, cable or TV. No way to know which without experimenting by switching out.

Or just unplug everything and replug again to see if something just didn't make a good connection.
