So you've already deleted it?
Sparseimage files are expandable disk images.
It's original location would help determine why and what created it but you could just mount the image and see what's in it.

Sparse Disk Image. I removed it from Trash, and now it's on the desktop. It's
corrupted and I cannot open it. Specifications for my iMac:
version: 10.6.7
capacity: 499.76 Gb
available: 221.6MB
used: 499.GB on disk.

If it's corrupt and you don't know where it came from and your Mac hasn't made any fuss about missing the file it's probably safe to delete. Maybe keep it in the trash for a while just to be sure
