Well, the Nanos are pretty much just USB flash drives....more or less.

USB 2.0 is technically just as fast as FW anyhow... So I don't see the harm..

Edit: I did a little hunting and it looks like standard speed on 2.0 is actually just 12Mbps... Am I reading this right?

but realistically it isnt

especially not firewire 800

i read somewhere that usb2.0 is faster than firewire, but usb 2.0 doesn't transfer at a constant rate like firewire. Therefore firewire would probably be faster during a larger transfer. Correct me if i'm wrong.

USB 2.0 can have speeds up to 480Mbps...but it is not a constant transfer speed...it happens in bursts here and there. It can go as low as 12Mbps.

FireWire is a constant 400Mbps transfer speed.

No, USB theoretical through put is 12 Mbps, USB 2.0 has a theoretical throughput of 480 Mbps. I say theoretical because neither will ever achieve this in reality.

Firewire has a theoretical throughput of only 400 Mbps but is still faster than USB 2.0 for sustained file transfers.

I am sort of amazed, but then to shove everything into such a small shell I guess Apple had to make some hard choices.

no need to correct you, this is correct, the firewire is faster for a large file transfer, but USB 2.0 is faster for smaller file trasnfers such as 1 song or 10 songs, but not faster when it is 100 songs or 10000 songs.

More importantly, many older Macs have FireWire but not USB2. So Apple is, effectively, forcing those users to transfer songs at USB1.1 speeds...about 35 times slower. (Same applies to the iPod Shuffle, for that matter.)

Even for those of us with USB2 Macs, FireWire is almost always faster in the real world, even for the little things. The only thing USB2 has going for it is a lower cost to implement.

Does your older PB have a PCMCIA slot? If so you could get a USB 2.0 card. If not then it would be S L O W!

I am sort of sad there is no Firewire chip in the Nano. I know with the small size they had to leave a few things out, but for users of older Macs it's going to be a pain. I bet with Firewire and the Flash Ram it would fly! Oh well. It's a nice unit for sure. I hope Apple in the future does not totally eliminate Firewire since for external drives and video cams it's much better and faster.

does any one think that that could just be older and they fixed it to where it is FW, i dont think that MR. Jobs would do that to us

On the Apple Canada site the usb cord is listed as an accessory but not a fw cord...

im not too sure but it wont really matter to most will it?

dtravis7 ive got the 12" so no PCMICA slot, not to worry though i guess ill just have to live with current iPods lol

i don't think it matters either. all computers come with usb drives. not all come with firewire.

Very true, USB2 is backward compatable BUT, USB 1.1 is SLOW. It would take forever to fill the Nano with 1.1 USB.

I think that they're marketing that towards Windows users much more because it seems Windows users buy most of the iPods, to me. And seeing as how I have seen several PC's with out FireWire, they just don't need to "waste" time with making it FireWire compatible. Other reasons may include: They had to finish it by the opening date, so they didn't have enough time to like write the script or whatever for FireWire. So perhaps you'll see it in a future update (hopefully).
