mail not responding

I have mac osx 10.4, I have a problem with Mail. When I click on the icon Mail comes up, but my inbox doesnt load and I just get spinning beach ball. i have to Forcequit Mail.
i have tried to Turn Airport on and off, restarted Mac, no joy.
Can anyone help pls? thanks
