Just my own musings, no more; but anyone else think that 10.8 & .9 will be called...

...these:

OS X 10.8 "Snow Lion"
OS X 10.9 "Mountain Lion"

Snow Lion as it both harkens back to Snow Leopard & is a "celestial animal" of Tibet, making it appropriate to Steve Jobs' Buddhism - and Mountain Lion is another name for Cougar, a well-known colloquialism for an older lady who's still got it ;D seems appropriate for what will presumably be the last version of OS X before something completely new is brought out for the Mac platform! ;P

I think they will get away from using cats after Lion.

I know the general topic of future names has been addressed many times before, but as my topic was the specific idea that all three last versions of OS X (well, assuming the next Mac OS after 10.9 won't be OS X 11.0, which would just be confusing!) would all be named with variations on the theme of "Lion" - and my reasoning for why - I didn't think it too repetitious to post it in a new thread!

Thine is the power of course, & if you feel my thread is unworthy delete it - but it honestly wasn't meant to bunge-up the boards... :\

Discuss away!:) Undoubtably folks will reply with "cat" names for upcoming OS versions...so the links were included to bring folks "up to speed" with what's already been creatively suggested.:)

Thought occurs, maybe there'll be one last version, in honour of all those old console games set in the year "20XX":

OS X 10.X "Nyan Cat!" ;D

IIRC Steve did say that they used Lion because it is the "King of the Jungle". As such the implication is that "Lion" may be the last iteration of OSX and we may see OS XI (11) after that. The truth of any of that remains to be seen however.

That's why I was thinking that if OS X does go all the way up to 10.9 they might keep the Lion name & just add to it...

Of course, only time will tell...

That would be quite appropriate to the 2009 Star Trek movie; where the Enterprise bridge had a very Apple-inspired look to it, while the engine room was a Budweiser brewery! :p

I can see the logic in that. We got to get to OS 11 sometime...and there's certainly no rule that says we have to go all the way to OS 10.9 before getting to 11.0.

The Flying Cat?

There's nothing to say that Apple will stick with cat names nor anything to say that the OS X line of operating systems will extend beyond 10.7. On the other hand, they could stick with the cat names and develop OS X up to 10.20. Who knows.

That is a good point.

Given how Lion shows Apple to be making OS X more iOS like, it is very possible that the last OS X (whether it be 10.7, 10.8, or 10.9) will be replaced by a Mac-optimised version of iOS (possibly called iOS X, to signify the fusion of the two systems?), simply including things like the Finder & a "Desktop" as Apps, launchable from a home screen the same as whatever is found on that generation of iPads/iPhones/iPods...

I doubt that. iOS doesn't offer anywhere near the functionality needed by computer users. It's great for portable devices but I can't ever see it being scaled up to meet the needs of Mac users.

10.8 will be "Snow Lion", 10.9 will be "Liger", then OSX 11 will be simply "Dog".

Methinks and suggests "Ocelot" for 10.8, "Lynx" for 10.9.

Hmm...codenames for OS XI...dog...

11.0 "Fox"
11.1 "Grey Wolf"
11.2 "Coyote"

etc...
