If its a case of my MBP being 'wonky' how easy/difficult will it be for Apple to replace it?

I would call them and go into great detail of the trouble you've had, the troubleshooting steps you've taken, and further emphasize the inconvenience this is causing and what the downtime will cost you personally for needing it serviced/replaced. The stronger you make your case, the more likely they will go above and beyond.

If you continue to successfully use your computer with the external drive, while that in itself is helpful, I wouldn't go so far as to assume it IS the internal drive that is the problem. It may well be a component on the motherboard itself, like the SATA controller chip, which I don't expect would have anything to do with an external drive on USB/Firewire.

Good point and great advice. Knowing how Murphy's Law operates it could well be as lifeisabeach stated.

In any event, please let us know.

So, it is pointless that I keep working off the external hdd. Therefore, I will replace the internal hdd and re-install the OS. Would you recommend a clean install over a clone of my external to this new internal hdd? I would prefer option 2 but if I should not then I won't.

I wouldn't go so far to say it's pointless to continue operating off the external hard drive. However, if you wish to try a new internal hard drive to see if the old one was the cause, that's OK.

Reinstalling Snow Leopard over the clone will not remove or delete any of your applications or documents. (Assuming you do not erase the hard drive first.) A SL reinstall will overwrite system files with new ones and leave everything else intact. After the reinstall, you'll have to run software update to bring SL up to 10.6.7.

Be sure to keep one good copy of the clone or a Time Machine backup in case something goes wrong during the swap and reinstall.

Hi all,
So I replaced the hdd on my mbp and used the installation DVD to install the OS. After which I copied clone to this fresh installation so I can access my files. It is just under 48 hours since then and I have not gotten the USUAL kernel panics. However, I have gotten this new panic which occurs whenever I 'wake up' the mbp from sleep. When I put my computer to sleep and attempt wake her up, the screen that not give any display. I am forced to power her down and restart. After restarting, I get this kp. Here is part of it.

Try a PRAM NVRAM reset and SMC reset. If that cures it, great. If not, it's probably time for it to go to Apple.

Sorry this has been such a drag for you. Hopefully we can get this sorted out. If the machine does have to go to Apple, make sure you have a backup of all your data before sending it off. Do you have another machine you can use in the meantime?

Thanks for everything. I will let you know how everthing goes.

Hi guys,
Its been over a month since my last post. I returned my Mac to Apple and they changed the Main Logic Board. I only received it today so I really can't say that all is well just yet. I will keep you updated as time goes by. Thanks again for your support.

Good day.

Do you have an update on your KP problem? Did Apple fix it right the first time?

Hi PatM,
It appears that Apple MAY have fixed it right the first time. I have not had a kernel panic since I received the my Mac from Apple. Its only been just over 2 weeks so I won't say that the fix was perfect just yet.

Here's your problem...

Thank you for your quick reply. I forgot to mention that I did the Apple Hardware Test that came on the disk with this machine. The test reported that the hardware was good. ...

You stated that you uninstalled third party utilities, like Parallels, but it is readily apparent that you have several third party kernel extensions, including that from Parallels, that are still installed and running. You should try a CLEAN install of the OS.

From all your other troubleshooting, I am fairly sure this may be the problem. Bad memory would have been a good guess, but since you ran Rember and nothing came up, it is likely these third party kext files that are the source of the problem.

A clean install on a bootable external drive is a good way to test this theory, I see you had partial success with this in a later post, but then ran into a sleep-wake-bug / I/O driver bug with the external drive.

At this point, it appears you already had Apple replace hardware, which was likely unnecessary, but may have coincidentally solved your problem by forcing a clean install of the OS.
