safari quits when i open preferences

hey guys, im new to mac, and am still trying to navigate my way around.

i bought a new mac pro 2011 and the hard drive crashed about four days, so i took it back, and now have a new hard drive, but ive noticed a few odd things.

the main one being that everytime i open Safari and try to open preferences it quits unexpectedly and i have to restart it.

i know it shouldnt be doing this but i have no idea what to do in terms of fixing it. :\

Quit Safari. Go to Home/Library/Preferences and drag com.apple.Safari.plist to your Desktop. Now open Safari. Try Safari > Preferences. Better?

And failing that simply drag it to the trash (Safari App) and download it again.
