Hello,

New guy here. I bought the new iMac yesterday. I have a 27' middle range iMac.. The $1699 one. I need some guidance about the ram upgrade. Can I put a 8th ( 2x4gb) in That iMac and make it work? This means I would have filled up all four spot for ram. (2x2gb) + ( 2x4gb) = 10Gb?

Thanks in advance :)

Yes..as long as you buy RAM that is supported by the iMac, you can put up to a maximum of 4GB in each of the slots..so keeping the stock 2x2GB, you can go 2x4GB to get 12GB (not 10GB as you stated)..

If you wanted to get the maximum 16GB, then you'd have to replace the stock 2x2GB with 2x4GB..

I'd suggest that you visit crucial.com and use the System Checker which will tell you exactly which RAM you need based on your iMac..

Regards

Why would adding more memory over heat? No relation there..:)

The iMac is going to be hot to the touch at the top because that's how it's dispelling the heat..it sucks in colder air from the bottom..

how about leaving it on all day and night?

How about on all day & night for months & months in a row! After the first 15-20 minutes or so...the computer will be up to whatever operating temperature it likes to be at. So any time spent on the computer after that will be at the same temp. Assuming the same demands. If you start playing games or watching internet videos...then the temp will increase.

in the apple site, when u costumize your Imac , you get 2 slots for the 4GB & 8GB Imacs, and 4 slots if you order the 16GB Imac.

Way... way too many specs to list.
I have a 4GB (as delivered) iMac in front of me, with 4 sticks of ram in it.. 2 slots will be used for 4 and 8GB configurations, 12, 16, 20, 24, 32, will all have to use 4.

My IMac does not run hot at all. My time capsule is hotter than my IMac. My old Sony was three times as hot as my IMac.

I plan on adding more ram soon. I will use either OWC or Crucial ram.

.. then there's things like Fast User Switching, which will ramp up the RAM usage quickly too.

Memory

Hi

I'm new to mac so forgive me for asking.

I have looked on Apple and Crucial and both of those sites say that the max ram you can have in the mid 2011 imac is 16gb.

I have read on other sites and on this one that the same imac can be used with 32gb ram.

Does anyone know for sure???

Cheers, Dave
