Customize toolbar?

When composing an e-mail In MAIL, if I want to Bold a word, or Italicize it, or Underline it, I have to click on Fonts and then make my change. Is there a way to display these functions (icons) on the top as part of a toolbar, so that I can simply highlight the word and then click on the appropriate icon?

Have you tried highlighting the word and then hitting CMD+B, CMD+I, or CMD+U for Bold, Italic and Underline?
