I am not a network person...that being said:

I have a MBP (2011) that is setup to use the Apple Airport (wireless router). Can my MBP use the ethernet direct connect AND have the wireless on at the same time?

IF I have to switch between the two, what is the easiest thing to do to switch back and forth?

Thanks, --bill

Sure you can - but to what end? The point of having an Airport router is to supply wireless connectivity.

I'm going to guess that your aim is to somehow increase performance. Can you confirm and add a little detail in as to what you're trying to do?

Easiest way I've found to switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet is to simply turn off Airport. Your Mac will then automatically revert to Ethernet. Turn it back on and Wi-Fi will be the preferred connection.
