Apple CEO Steve Jobs is still refusing to say when he might return to work full-time, an excerpt from his Wednesday interview reveals. "Look, we're here to talk about location today, not me," the executive is quoted as saying. On-record topics included not only the iOS location file scandal but the 10-month delay of the white iPhone 4....

Makes one wonder if he is returning. Maybe in a smaller role, part-time, or something like that??

^ True, but Jobs' is the guy with whom the buck stops. Nobody argues with Steve Jobs. I would worry that the others -- all creative, capable, forces of nature in their own right -- would begin to fragment without somebody like Jobs steering them in a common direction.

I'd tend to agree. There is no doubt that Steve has done an incredible job steering the ship through troubled waters and diversifying the brand, but Apple is in a very different place than it was in the late 80's and early 90's. It would take some incredibly bone-headed maneuvers to break this kind of momentum, and it's hard for me to believe that Steve hasn't been smart enough to build a good bench of talent over the last few years, given his declining health.
