A relative has a black Macbook that she bought used from usedmac. I am reasonably certain that it came with OS X version 10.4 or 10.5. It currently has 10.6.7.

So my question is, is this from updates? If so, then at what point, if ever, do you need to purchase a newer version?

No, 10.6.7 was not available as an update to 10.5. 10.6 is Snow Leopard and 10.6.7 is the current version. Someone will have had to have bought SL and installed it.

To go from 10.4 to 10.5 or 10.5 to 10.6, etc. but not from 10.4.1 to 10.4.2

If ever? Money keeps them coming, not altruism.

I guess usedmac must have installed 10.6 before they shipped it then, because she hasn't purchased any updates. Used mac's usually don't come with any install discs.

Thanks for the info.

They do if you insist on them John. Suggest she wait for the release of Lion OS X.7 shortly and buy a copy of that subject to what model MacBook she purchased. The install disc is the best trouble shooting utility available.

Usedmac doesn't actually state what version that they install prior to sale. I know that the used Macs sold by Powermax are all 10.4 or 10.5, so I guess I just assumed that these would be the same.

I know the "blackbook" hasn't been available since around 2008(?). She likes it a lot, and I may buy her the upgrade to 10.7 when it comes out so that she has a disc.

Buying used hasn't been a bad experience, but I still think that if I get one for myself, I'll go with a new one, probably a 13 or 15" MBP.
