Hi all. Today I was playing SC2 and I had a kernel panic. I checked the logs and this is what it says:

I'm guessing it was caused by the video card drivers? If so, is my card bad or just faulty drivers?

I have an 27 inch iMac 11,3 generation with a core i7 2.93ghz and 8gb of apple ram.

Certainly looks like a Video Card problem, could be either hardware or software related.
Try reseting PRAM/NVRAM and also booting into your OSX disks and repairing disk and disk permissions.

Hope this helps

As you suspected the KP occurred because of a video card problem:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):

It may have been caused by the overheating of the card itself. If your iMac is still under warranty, take it on in to the genius bar and have them check it out. If the fan on the Radeon GPU has failed or is dirt clogged, it will overheat especially when playing a game. That will cause a KP.

Your model iMac uses a separate daughter card for the GPU which plugs into the logic board. As such, it can be changed out without replacing the entire logic board as would be required on most other machines.

I do suspect it was caused by overheating as well. I noticed when I was playing SC2 a couple of minutes before the kernel panic that my fans kicked in really fast and it sounded like they were maxed out at their full RPM. After the kernel panic I touched the top of my iMac and it was hotter than normal. I'm not shocked since my room temperature was about 82 degrees. I went ahead and I ran Apples Hardware Test today which was on my second installation dvd with my room temperature at 76 degrees set to "extended testing" and it passed with flying colors. I also played a bit of World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2 again with zero issues and their FPS still the same.

I do have Apple Care so if I notice anything else starting to act weird or another kernel panic I will bring in it and have them look at it. In the meantime, I will kept monitoring its temps now with Temperature Monitor

Keep in mind, we're not talking about the CPU overheating as that will cause a shutdown of the entire machine. The cooling fans kicking into high gear during intense activity is normal. Your machine uses an ATI Radeon GPU which can also get very hot during game play.

So keep your eye out for any overheating of the GPU which can generate a KP. If it occurs again, I would make an appointment with the genius bar and have it looked at.
