I have noticed that OSX, for some reason, calculates disk space usage with a scale of 1000 bytes, not 1024 like it used to. Like for example, OSX says my applications folder is 17.62GBs, but Whatsize says it's 16.2GBs. I have talked to my work mates, and they confirmed this is what 10.6 likes to do. So how can I change this to what it should be? Thanks

Snow Leopard did indeed change over to using 1000 bytes scale and that is something you cannot change..if apps decide to use 1024 bytes instead, you'll just have to live with that..

I'm curious as to why it even matters? Most computers now have 250+ GB of storage or more..so why even worry about this?

Regards

I wonder why they made that change, just to be different i guess? I just like everything to be the same with my system, Mac or PC. I don't like it when something's not the same when data is read, no matter how large the hard drive is.

Apples way...or the highway I guess!;)

Pretty soon Apple will be telling us that 1+1=3. Ha ha!

I'm thinking this is the first post I've seen here since Snow Leopard was introduced related to this. (Well, at least since the first couple of weeks after it hit.)

You just wouldn't believe how many folks have no clue about Base 2 vs Base 10 and how many "I have a XXX GB hard drive, but it says I only have YYY space. Where is the rest of it?" we use to get. Prior to SL, I'd bet we had no less than 10-15 posts every month from people wanting to know where the rest of the space went to on their hard drives. Then people popping up and telling them it was because formatting ate it and all sorts of other stuff.

I would guess the number of phone calls to AppleCare played a big part in this change.

Huh, that's interesting; I guess coming from an old/current Windows user, when I changed they were the same, then SL rolls around and changes it. I have had the OS for awhile, I always wondered it though, but decided to put a post up now. That just seems like a huge change to me.
