I know these computers run pretty warm, but I think I could fry an egg on top of my 27" iMac!

Nope...you're going to have to do better than that!;) Someone recently reported getting 208°F on their MacBook/MacBook Pro. One thing to notice in the picture you included...your CPU fan is only running at 939rpm...that's NOTHING.:)

If I had a $1.00 for every time this question is asked...;)

That and when is the next release of the new iMac, MBP, etc.

Your machine would shut itself off if it ever did get too hot.

Why is your CPU fan running that slowly? I thought around 2000 rpm was the Apple preset minimum. Do you have something keeping the fan speed set low?

Great question!:)

OP: Your "secondary heatsink" says 178°F (81°C)...although I would say that this is normal/ok...generally at those temps the fans should be running faster (higher rpm's). Thus if the fans were at higher rpms...then the temps would be lower.

I don't have anything controlling the fan speed. I can speed it up, but 9xx is the default.

You can download an App like SMCFanControl and kick up the fan speed on your iMac. It seems to work quite well and I can keep my CPUs down around 120 when all 4 cores are maxed out.
