Sounds like an old, noisy hard drive to me. Sometimes when they age, they make noise like that, particularly when they spin up initially. I would definitely make sure your data is backed up.

That'd be my first thought.

No disc in your optical drive is there?

I've had success rolling up some paper into a tube as a makeshift stethoscope for locating misc noises in my rigs.

I have a new 1tb which I work off of. Transferred everything from the other 300g, which was erased, reformatted, and only has Leopard on it. I can't remember how far back the noise goes, possibly not long after I added the 300 to complement the original 160. So if it is the HD, it's dieing a sloooow death. Have two externals with full backup.

Why would the noise come through the audio channels?

Dying hard drive unless you are an ambulance chaser?

Can't really account for that - but the noise is very familiar to me. In my professional life, I maintain a few hundred PCs (many of them quite old) and have heard this exact noise many times.

That's good enough for me. I'll pull the offender out tomorrow and report.
