My daughter is at college and she did an upgrade to Safari.
It crash and now she has no Safari it says "you cannot open the application safari because it may be damaged or incomplete".

So I downloaded the update on Apple and sent it to her.

She ran the update and still has the same problem.

She needs a web browser to do some research.

Any help in fixing Safari would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

First step would be to repair permissions.
Next step would be to trash the Safari prefs.
Either of those steps should do the trick.

But in order to give a little better advice, what version of OS X is she running? What version of Safari did she have first? When was the las time she downloaded any updates via Software Update?

I am not sure what version she was on. Whatever the installed version was when she bought it in June.

She is running Tiger on a 17" Powerbook

She was doing the software update this morning.

This is a difficult fix as we are conversing on AIM to fix the problem and she is a Mac novice and of course no browser to research the problem.

I am sending her a .dmg file of Firefox to get her going. I hope that works for her for now.

The preference file you are refering to, is that com.apple.Safari.plist in the Prefences folder?

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply.

She will also want to go to:
username>Library>Safari
and delete the pref files there as well.

What new software (if any) was installed before this error occurred? If she has her restore/install discs, she can also try an Archive and Install. This will preserve her data, but reinstall necessary components...but this should be saved for a last resort.
