if i download anything from the internet is immediately opens in textEdit meaning i cant see the actual download, what do i do !! please help asap

What browser are you using? It sounds as if you've got it set to automatically open files.

I use Safari and have it set to auto open "safe" files. Don't believe I've ever had a single file open in TextEdit.

What files and from where are you downloading. A specific example would be best.

i downloaded a commentary contest file of gamefront i think plus a load of other things

i cant find the link but i had a popup saying this program cannot be run in DOS mode

Sounds like you downloaded a Windows only .exe file. They're not going to run in OS X, and yep, if you try to open one of them, they may open in TextEdit.

But you said if you download "anything". So download another file from anywhere. Pick a free application from here and see what happens. Or open a pdf like this one and tell us what happens.
