i just got and old ipod 4th generation from 2005 from my friend. and it worked well and then i went to restore it and it told me to plug it into a wall and I did and it still is displaying that even though it is plugged in. I am using itunes 10 on the 2010 macbook pro. i have also tried firewire and usb power to get it to install and it wont pick up on the computer. thanks for the help.

Sounds like the hard drive has stuck, mine does this very occasionally, actually, it was doing it a lot, but hasn't done for months come to think of it! I digress.
Try resetting the iPod>
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.

That should free it, or if not I found a light knock on the side got the drive spinning again. After that try the restore as you were doing originally.

Yep. The are 5 generations of the original iPod, before they renamed them Classic, and about 4 nano's, 3 shuffles, and 4 touches.
Take a look at this Apple page.
