I plug in my external hard drive and I get a Kernal Error

I have a former three hundred and twenty gigabyte internal hard drive from western digital (Scorpio Black), that I reformatted into an external hard drive. I also have a lovely one terabyte external hard drive from Seagate, that has a detachable usb cable plus hard drive mount plug in, which happens to perfectly fit my former internal hard drive. So I put two and two together and for awhile four was bliss. The three hundred and twenty gigabyte drive was working perfectly as an external drive. Then something went wrong. I may have accidentally partially incorrectly sent the three hundred and twenty gigabyte drive as a RAID (before knowing really what it was). I know I should not have even been messing with it but I saw it in the disk utility and I was slightly curious as to what it was, but did not want to risk my internal hard drive of my current laptop, but I am not even sure that is the source of the problem, but I figured the more info on the situation the better and a better chance of getting it fixed, so I admit my mistake. Anyway, when I plug my three hundred and twenty gigabyte drive in it dims the entire screen locking it and tells me to hold the power button until the laptop shuts down and to restart. upon restart and login, after unplugging the three hundred and twenty gigabyte drive's usb plug from the laptop or we get no where but an other dim gray screen telling me to once again hold down the power button to shut down, I get a little screen informing me my laptop was forced to shut down (What a shock I would have never guessed) then it gives me this lovely long report that I have no idea what means:

Does anyone know what this means?

I just want my external hard drive back.

Looks like your little experiment with RAID got you into trouble. You should be able to kill the RAID with Disk Utility. You may have to boot from your install DVD to do it though.

Anyway, when in Disk Utility, click on the RAID tab, highlight the drive and then select the - (minus) button at the bottom to remove it. Afterward reboot and try again.

I actually thought of that before, and went to disk utility and looked all over and there was absolutely no raid set for me to remove. I then tried as you said and looked everywhere to try and find a raid set or anything that would resemble my previous tinkerings and again nothing what so ever could be found. So I have tried looking for any and all drivers that are applicable. No change I still get a kernal error. I have used the seagate diagnostics program. Again no change, kernal error.

The weird thing is if I boot into my partion for windows vista, the laptop does not have a kernal panic attack. This leads me to think it is something potentially saved in the NVRAM or PRAM. The idea has popped into my head to reset it but my tinkering got me into this mess and I would rather not reset something unless I am sure it is either my last possible option or I am assured it will not wreck my laptop and I know what resetting it will fully do.

Go ahead and follow through with your idea to reset NVRAM and PRAM. It certainly can't hurt to do it.

The strange thing is that the KP is clearly indicating that the AppleRAID driver is crashing and causing the KP. Why the driver should load in the first place if there is not a RAID setup is kind of a mystery.

Let us know.

I reset my NVRAM/PRAM, and then tried my external again. I got the same exact response as before. (Just to make sure when resetting the NVRAM/PRAM it is suppose to make the entire noise twice, the sort of Mac Gong sound? If so I did it correctly and it had no effect). So I retried the Disk Utility step for a search to see maybe I might have missed something and again I found no RAID set anywhere. I continued with the disk utility idea by going over and doing each of the four options of the first aid section. Disk Verify & Disk Repair went off with out a hitch and were completed with no warnings or issues. Then I clicked Verify Disk Permissions, and this is what came up as the only issue:

"Warning:SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired."

I made sure to write down the wording exactly in order to report my findings back. Then as if I did not know the out come all ready I clicked the Repair Disk Permissions button. Surprise, It repeated the above message and said everything else was completely fine. I verified and repaired disk on the seagate usb cable attached TB external hard drive, or really verified and repaired my TB drive that had no issues already, but I wanted to cover all my bases just in case. I restarted into my Mac and tried my malfunctioning external again. No change and I had to force shut down like before.

I restart with out the external plugged in and using a combination of MacExplorer and MacPilot programs I located the trouble file. I copied the information of the file and here it is:

Can I delete this or will it mess up my system?

I do not care what happens to the external connected to this so if I can still wipe it clean reformat it after this life will be golden. This file is causing me troubles and kernel panics.

Merged your two posts since they're the same subject.

I would go ahead and remove the file to see if that resolves the problem. Don't completely delete it though, rather move it somewhere or keep it in the Trash without emptying the Trash.

Sorry about dual posting, I am sure that is annoying for you to have to deal with. I was hoping a more catchy title about deleting things would catch more peoples attentions. I have moved the file but the force restart requirement and kernel panic still happens. I even repaired permissions completely and successfully after moving the file to see if that would help. my only guess at this point is that it has to be something on the external hard drive causing the kernel panic. Would starting my laptop in safety mode prevent the laptop from reading the external's program and start up normally and continue to work normally so I could go into the external hard drive and just wipe it clean and or reformat it all together?

Starting in safe boot mode only loads the necessary Apple drivers and kernel extensions that are needed. It also runs a check on your internal hard drive at the same time. I'm not sure the external hard drive will even be mounted during a safe boot.

Let me test it here and I'll get back to you by editing this post.

OK, I'm back. I just tested my system by booting to safe mode with my external hard drive mounted. It mounted OK and I was able to use Disk Utility with it.

Go ahead and try it to see if you can format the drive and wipe it clean. Of course make a backup first of anything that's on the drive that you wish to keep. If after wiping the drive you still get a KP when it's mounted, the drive probably has an electronic defect in its controller that's causing it.

Let us know.

Although this thread is a little dated, it comes up as one of the first results in Google so I thought I should probably make an account and post here.

I was having this problem, or at least a very similar one, today. I would plug in my external drive, and would experience a kernel panic after approximately thirty seconds. I have included a printout of my kernel-panic report at the bottom of my post.

It turns out that the problem is caused by spotlight trying to index the drive. Why this would be the case I'm not sure, perhaps it's a faulty drive, perhaps all the invisible files from different operating systems are confusing.

My temporary, workaround solution was to disable spotlight indexing for the drive. Open up terminal and type in:

sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/USBDRIVENAME

Where USBDRIVENAME is the name of your drive. You will be prompted for your password. Note that you will need to do this while the drive is plugged in, but before your computer crashes. If your computer is crashing too fast for this, disable spotlight entirely, then plug in your drive, disable the spotlight for the drive, then re-enable spotlight as a whole.

It's not exactly an ideal solution (spotlight won't search your external drive any more), but it will at least let you access your files.

Here's my report, just in case anyone wants to check for similarity.

Possible Solution

I had the same problem and created an account here to share my solution. The spotlight solution above did not work for me.

The only solution I found was that although my data on my external hard drives that had been in a mirrored RAID array was corrupt with Mac OSX, but I was able to plug the drives into a Linux machine and save all of my data (by moving it all over to other disks), then reformatting the broken drives for Mac OSX through the Linux machine and then moving all of my data back onto the drives and resetting up the RAID array. Although I tested with a Linux machine, I did find that an Ubuntu LiveCD could be used in my mac as well. I could recover my data on my own mac! I just had to use Ubuntu! When I recreated the RAID I used a 128 kB block size, I believe the 256 kB block size caused the problem.

Just sharing this in case it can help anyone else, as I lost 5 TB of data and spent months trying to recover it - this was my solution.
