Is this upgrade of ram worth it?

Hello,
I have a Imac i5 27" the first one to come out and i was thinking of upgrading the ram from 4gb to 12gb in the following format 2gb x2 (pair) 4gb x2 (pair).
I use my mac for quite intensive large designs in photoshop and final cut etc. Will this ram upgrade which is about £76.00 make a large noticeable difference?

let me tell you first hand, the RAM upgrade make a huge difference, i have the exact setup you do, and the factory amount wasn't cutting it for multitasking.

I upgraded my mini to 8 gigs, and even during normal use (surfing, mail, music, etc.) it often uses over 5 gigs. This means easier switching from one app to another. If you have large photos or videos open, it is going to make a huge difference.

Totally agree..I have the i7 iMac which had the stock 4GB and when I ran a VM, OS X would stumble quite a bit. I ended up upgrading to 12GB and now have 4GB assigned to the VM and OS X doesn't miss a beat any more..

The iMac's have 4 DDR slots that support 4 GB maximum in each slot, so you can have up to 16GB of memory in total. Since the stock configuration is to have 2 GB x 2, adding 4 GB x 2 into the empty slots makes the most sense and if you DO have use for 2GBx2 then, upgrading those slots to 4GBx2 makes sense..

Those are the same ones I got about a month ago..took about 5 mins from powering down, removing the cover on the slot at the bottom of the iMac, inserting the 2 memory chips, putting the cover back on, powering up and enjoying 12GB..

So i have 2 empty slots ?

Hey you have just convinced me to upgrade lol

so atm its stock being 2 x 2gb ?

Can i put 2 x 4gb in the empty slots or do they have to match up the exisiting ram and upgrade all to 4gb bits?

they dont have to match up any suitable 2x4gb set will do
try and do it in pairs if possible

you cant upgrade RAM on Macbook Airs. So you are kind of right.

(All other models you can)
