Yes it is included. Are you familiar with Java development?

No, I am not. I bought a book to teach me (I am eager to learn), and it says I need Java Development Kit, but I can't find it.

The book should give you some hints and details. In my experience, books on programming generally take you through the steps required to setup a development environment. So I don't confuse you, I'll let the book do the talking there. ;)

You don't "see" the Java development kit - it's a set of command line tools. In other words, it won't be something you'll see in your Applications folder.

Where do you write Java code on a Mac?

I tried writing it in TextEdit, but it won't let me save it as .java. It says it can't be saved with that and has to have .rtf as the ending. Please help!!

Merged threads.

Go to Format > Make Plain Text. By default, TextEdit saves as rich text and compilers & interpreters need plain text.

I'd suggest that you look into a programming editor. You'll find that they make the job considerably easier. If you're programming Java, you might want to look into something like Eclipse and JEdit.
