I've been a mac guy for a while and am wanting to know how to set the best security settings for my mac in general and with wireless. It doesn't have to be software but firewalls and anti virus would be nice just in case precautions.

And on the wireless side - make sure you're using WPA or WPA2 (preferably).

Thanks,
Are you talking about setting up MY network as wpa/2? I'm wondering about when I'm away from the house using wireless.

Enable your firewall in stealth mode, and if you're really paranoid (like me) you can run your user account as 'standard', and have a separate admin account. Make sure all sharing is turned off.

There's no way to be 100% secure over a public WiFi spot without using VPN. So the best bet is to simply make sure you don't log onto random hotspots that you don't know who they belong to.

Like we used to say about motor cars "The best security is the nut behind the wheel!"

Do as suggested and practice save browsing habits, never giving up your password and whilst on using public WiFi never use banking passwords etc.

Basically, however, you're just being paranoid. It's not your fault; Windows made you that way.

You're on a Mac now. Relax. The best security is common sense. Don't pirate software, don't install things that you have no idea what they are, and don't fret about public networks so much.
