just got the 2011 macbook pro 500gb i7 and i notice when i play youtube videos the heat of the cpu rises significantly currently im at 148 F just using itunes and two firefox windows, but before i was watching a video on youtube and it went to around 170 F, is that bad or strange in any way? it spiked to 190 F at one time when doing youtube facebook and a forum with itunes running.

idle i get around anywhere between 90-120 F

Welcome to an increased knowledge of the world of Flash.

My suggestion is to remove the temp monitoring software from your Mac and be as oblivious to this as you were on your Windows machines.

If you do any higher end gaming...it will heat up as well. Everything you're experiencing is VERY common & VERY normal.:)

Could not agree more. Flash is a hog - and you can expect your temps to rise as the CPU is put under increased load playing those videos. The fans are thermostatically controlled and will spin up and cool the machine to appropriate levels. You need not monitor the temps, the machine will not overheat.

I think the reason that people are much more aware of this on Macs than on Windows notebooks is that they tend to be much slimmer, made out of (conductive) aluminum and are more noticeable when they warm up under load (but are normally very cool). It's just not as noticeable on bulky, plastic Windows notebooks.

But..."no matter what I'm doing"...is not everything!;)

Try a test...watch You-Tube videos for a while (15 minutes)...or play a fairly demanding game...and let's see if your MBP's fans don't kick into high gear.;)
