Can't partition need +HFX

I have no idea what or how to get it on my Mac. It asks for it every time. New installation on an iMac.

Will assume you're booting from the OS X disc to install on a new drive.

Try this tutorial - what you're looking for is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' as shown there.

No it's installed already. I'm trying to partition and cannot due to this error. +HFS is not installed or something similar.

OK it's a new installation 2 days ago. When I try to use the disk utility to partition the drive in two I get this message.
File system support needed such as HFS+ with journaling enabled.

The drive is already in Mac OS extended (journaled)

Are you sure the drive is formatted as HFS Extended Journaled? And that you're doing it correctly? Take a screenshot and post it here.

In order to partition you will need to boot from the Apple supplied or over the counter OSX DVD. Partitioning will destroy your current system and all of your documents. Period. You need to select the type of file format you want from the drop down menu in the format tab of Disc utility. Select HFS+ (Journaled), then go to the partition tab and set up your partitions as desired. Once that is done and you format the partitions you will be able to install a new copy os OSX.

There are third party apps that will allow you to partition your drive without wiping everything out. Never having used any of them I will allow others to make suggestions.

iPartition will do this, but you have to be careful.

Hello,

I posted three snaps the other day and I never heard from anyone. I’ve tried partitioning from the installation disk and got the same message. I then reformatted the whole drive to Mac OSX journaled since HFS + was not in the drop list and I still keep getting the same message.

I have an empty formatted drive that can’t be partitioned to HFS because the option is not available in the drop list. Anyone have any ideas?

FYI, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is HFS+

What format are you selecting for the bootcamp partition? What happens if you try and make the whole disc one Mac OS partition?

What kind of Mac is this?

OK it's a new 27in iMac with a 1TB drive. I did partition to Mac OS (journaled) This what it's been formatted to all along but partitioning attempts all fail producing that error message. Even from the installation disk. Bootcamp is now gone but it was NTFS and I had no problems with it.

Ok, so it fails even when you make it one Mac OS Extended partition then? What format are you selecting for Bootcamp?

What I am driving at is if you are going to boot a Windows sessions from the bootcamp partition it has to be NTFS but NTFS is not a selectable format for the Mac. You have to partition it with the Bootcamp utility (or so I am told). Maybe THAT is what is failing and holding the whole thing up.

I removed bootcamp and formatted the whole drive from the DVD. No change to the problem It's formatted to Mac OS as always but I still get the same message.

Can I do that from the installation disk? The hard drive has nothing on it. I'm disabled so I need help so I'll have wait till tomorrow. I'm on my PC for the time being. So what do I need to do to take a screenshot?

Yeah I'm stumped. I had a bad crash last week while making a VM using parallels. So I started over with a fresh installation. I've had the HFS problem since. Before the crash i could partition easily.

Well, the only other time I've seen an issue like this it was a bad HDD in my wife's CD iMac...

I'm going to try to format with my Paragon disk manager boot disk. It supports Mac formats. I have nothing to lose. Thanks for your help.
