Opening a program in the background?

17" MacBook Pro 4GB Ram, LED HD display, 200GB 7200RPM HD, 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; Macbook 2.4Ghz
Maybe it's just me, but I like to open a program while I'm doing something else. Is there a way to open a program without it opening on top of the program that I am currently using?

Well whats so hard about clicking the app icon then minimizing it, or bringing the other one to the back?
