Have been enjoying our MacBook Pro since Sept 2010, with no problems.

Today while doing light web browsing (no other apps open) it froze solid.

It had not been "restarted" for several months.

Everything stopped, cursor was an arrow, trackpad/keyboard unresponsive.

Force Quit either did not work or I did it wrong (have never had to use it).

I Googled on my iPhone, held the power button down until it shut down.

This evening it seems fine, but we are a bit on-edge about it.

Any advise from folks here is very appreciated, thanks!

I restart my Mac's every couple weeks...just as a precaution. So this may have been the source of the problem (depends on how you use your computer).

I would say as long as this sort of thing doesn't happen regularly (freezing up)...you should be fine. Also realize that this may only happen when you use a specific application...or if you use a specific combination of applications.

I'm betting if you restart your computer every 2-3 weeks...you will be fine.:)

p.s. Also...your MacBook Pro has warranty until Sept 2011. So if this does happen often...just take it to the Apple folks to look at.

Thanks!

We were using Safari (our most-used app) for browsing.

Since we have not restarted in months, we have also not "updated" either.

We will update, then restart every few weeks as suggested.

Thanks again!

hmm... so if what i'm reading and learning is true, we need to restart our MACs once in awhile and not just shut down and switch on? is this correct?

In the normal course of events, a system update or some other bit of software (or the need to leave the house for more than a few hours) should be a natural encouragement to restart the Mac every few weeks. So in other words, if you pay attention to Software Update and do a bit of routine maintenance (PLENTY of threads here on THAT topic), you'll be restarting your Mac every few weeks anyway, so it sort of takes care of itself.
