iMac + 27in Cinema Display - How to play all speakers at once?

Does anybody know how to aggregate the iMacs built in speakers/mic with the Cinema display's speakers/mic so they all work at once? It seems like this article was written for exactly what I'm trying to do, but doesn't work for me:

How to combine multiple audio interfaces by creating an aggregate device on Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard

When I followed that article, only one side (iMac) would play. I was also unable to control the volume after selecting the newly created sound device. I then found this article:

Audio tricks or more like when aggregate devices fail... - InfiniteMac OSx86

This person had the exact same behavior as I. His solution was to use third party software but I'd really like to do this via OSX not 3rd party.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Note: Moved thread since the issue would be the same whether an iMac or any of the notebooks.
