Ibook hard drive upgrade

I just bought a used G3 500 mhz ibook on ebay with a 10GB hard drive, which is obviously not enough. Can I use any 2.5" hard drive or is there a specific one for ibooks? Thanks

Almost any should work, just make sure it is the correct thickness, not all 2.5in drives are the same in that regard.

Seems like all the new ones are 9mm now.

Almost any 2.5" 9.5mm drive will work fine. Check out Other World Computing for a nice selection.

Do a search for iBook Hard drive. there should be several threads about it already.

I have done a HD replacement in my G3 iBook. I caution those wishing to do this to be prepared. This is a major undertaking since you have to strip the iBook all the way down to get to the drive.

Yeah, check out pbfixit.com though, they seem to have really good guides.
Or consider asking a technically gifted friend or relativ to do it for you.

does this void applecare?

yes, it does, but if your computer is already out of applecare, it wont make a difference.

Also a suggestion, while you've ripped apart your iBook to get to the harddrive, you might as well upgrade the cd-rom to a dvd-burner as it requires the same process.
