I need to clear out movies from my itunes library to free up memory. Is it possible to copy the movies to a disk so I can view them later just like dvds or do I have to remove them permanently?

Just a point of clarification - you need to free up disk space, not memory. The two are very different things and it's important to understand the difference (but I won't get into that here).

Sure. The easiest thing to do would be to export them straight to the external disk and then delete them out of iTunes and empty the trash.
