Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
This is all stemmed from me commenting on a comment to a friends post on Facebook.(The mistakes we make)

Friend on FB:

I HATE PCs.

Her friend no 1:
Better than **** mac.

My friend:

no, no they're not!

Her friend no 1:

A mac would literally melt if I tried my engineering programs on it.

Me:
You obviously are just a Mac hater who knows nothing about Macs.
I should add, that other than autocad for Mac, that you can also run Windows if the need be with Bootcamp, Parallels, VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox.
No it won't melt lol

Her friend no 1:
I had a professor at uni who tried to do FEM calcs on a mac - melted the processor and the motherboard. For someone who writes programs for computations, a mac simply won't cut it, they just don't have the power.

Me:
They actually do, in fact, the latest gen of Mackbook Pros and of coarse the high end iMacs and the Mac Pros have all the power and more that anyone could ever need.
I don't hazard a guess as to what Mac he was using or how old it was, but t...he times have definitely changed, not only with advances in the specs and the OS, but also in all the software available for Macs.

Her friend no 1:
I agree, the hardware is impressive in the new macs, but it's the OS that can't handle the x86_64 programs. If Apple developed a programming OS, I'd buy it.

Me:
Just a note, you can actually run Apple's latest OS in 64bit.
Mac OS X started supporting 64-bit console application since Tiger. Since Leopard it supports 64-bit gui apps.
As it stands, most Mac users have a 64-bit capable OS.

Her friend no 1:

Yep, that's right, but not an x86 programming platform. I run my calcs on an i7 Extreme and it still takes 3 days to get an answer. A Mac would most likely do it faster if the OS was compatible with my programs.

Me:
This is why I suggest to have the best of both words.
Running the x86 platform in Windows via bootcamp or VM, giving you not only the processing power, but also access to the multi trackpad gestures (which is superior to any other trackpad),... as well as having a well built machine, with the option of running OS X as well.
The Mac build and reliability with the OS and hardware compatibility is second to none. Keep in mind, that Lion (OS X 10.7) is due to be released in the near future, which I am sure, will be another leap ahead.
I know of many engineers using Macs in the manner that I suggest, who couldn't be happier.
Not trying to switch you, as if you are happy using a Windows PC, then there is no reason to change, but just want you to know that things have moved in leaps and bounds over the years, and that it is really worth taking a closer look at theses machines, and what they are actually capable of now.

Her friend no 2:

Im not getting into this again...
I love my pc. :D

Her friend no 1:

I'd use a mac os on my pc but I'm not paying 5k for hardware that's not as good as mine

My friend:

boys boys boys... I just couldn't rotate a document today when I was at uni... I don't even know what any of you are talking about. That's probably why I'm a Mac kinda person.

Her friend no 3:

Guys, I don't know you, but I've never seen a conversation on Amy's profile as awesome as this one! Thank you for the entertainment, please make it a regular feature!
My cousin, who's a computer programmer hates macs as well, I think it's m...ainly because of the old mac systems, they certainly have improved over recent years.. And I do love my Mac but that's just because it's easy to use!

Her friend no 1:

I can't mod a mac so I don't use them.

Her friend no 2:
‎^Amen brother

Me:
I can't mod a Porsche like a can a Toyota, nor would I want to..... Apples and oranges, or in this case, Apples and Windows PCs :D
I bow out out now, as this is not anything new.... The Mac Vs Windows PCs debate.
I like my car, I like my comp...uter, they both work, and I don't need to go to school/tafe/college/uni to be able to use them :)

Her friend no 2:
You see, thats the difference though.
I'd love modding my car/computer.

Sure you can get a piece of crap Honda....but what if you got yourself an old school 1969 chevy impala in moderate shape and you take your time working on it and replacin...g all the hardware to turn that chevy impala ss into a **** beast.

And not just that, you can keep on doing that, for as long as you like (or at least as long as it lasts) and at the same time you dont settle for less and you know you put in the work so it because a personal thing.

Point is....I love buying new graphic/sound/motherboard/etc cards and installing them.
Theres that new engine feel to it.

Her friend no 1:

bought a gtx 460 today, crysis 2 runs at 90 fps

Her friend no 2:
windows all the way!

macs are just SOOO restrictive!

btw, what's the point of running a windows VM inside a os x box... why not run is straight on windows? surely more power if you're using the same hardware?
...
even better yet... linux (is the software you're using works on linux that is)?

Her friend no 1:
sweet - haven't played it yet - got the demo dl'ed though!

Her friend no 2:
son of bi...
Crysis 2 would collapse with my HP pavillion laptop.
Did you try Bulletstorm?....what an insane game.

I miss my old PC.

Her friend no 1:
the beta got leaked. Already finished it haha

….friend 1 and 2 are still going 30 comments strong to eachother :D

Too many...
I've been in this kind of argument before. I can usually win against all their other argument, and they almost always change all the reasons why they hate mac, and eventually reside on the thought that you can play more games on a "pc." Statistically speaking, a pc can ONLY play PC games legally. A Mac has its own set of game that you can't find for PC. A Mac can run Windows, and all of its programs. Therefor, a Mac can play more games than a PC. BOOM! conversation ender. Unless you have die-hard gamers who do everything illegally, and pirate everything. That's when I say, "I outgrew playing games in my parents' basement more than 10 years ago *(remember to smile)*!" That's a devastating blow.

These debates are always so epic. I've never even owned a Mac before (I joined recently because I'm getting one) but I've still argued with PC people about it. If you think about it, it's really kinda ridiculous because it's all personal preference. People just refuse to think that "Mac" could *ever* be on the same level as Windows.

I looked beyond the window and saw Mac through it :)

While I didn't take a poll to see what they were specifically being used for - I just spent two days on the campus of MIT and probably saw easily a 15:1 Mac - Windows ratio. I notice Macs a lot more now that I use one. :)

ah man i had this the other day just for saying i don't need AV software. some random girl hijacked the convo - saying i was a "smug mac user."

i guess it just really gets on PC users nerves when you say anything good about macs. i dont know if its jealousy... or hatred.

lesson learned - dont talk about it publicly on Facebook.

Has references to pornography, but nothing questionable is shown. Swears a bit too... :p

Good conversation though! Good call calling it quits on that one, it didn't seem to be going anywhere really productive. :p

#Good discussion nonetheless.

#hahha it's all great fun! In the end it's always going to be a holden ford kinda discussion...

#Ford.

#holdens are SOO much better...

i mean, build quality, spare parts prices, and they simply look better! i mean, that green is just... oh awesome!

haha dw jk
...
:p

holdens are better though.

#Holden it is. Ian can have no say in this one =P

#Nowadays apple generally use similar hardware for macs as PCs so for the same spec on a mac you can sometimes pay 2 or 3 times as much. All you pay for is a designer box that looks sleek and their operating system. As far as I'm aware windo...ws 7 is now more stable than mac OS and as previous posters have said PCs are much more customisable and their is much more software available and much cheaper. mac users do tend to be obsessed with all things apple and don't take criticism easily. At the end of the day macs will always be for a tiny market, i think they are like 1% of computers. If people really want to use mac OS I would recommend using a hackintosh system. (A PC running mac OS). Or use a multi boot system whereby at start up you can choose to run either mac os or windows. ;-)See more

#PC vs. Mac: The Straight Scoop

#interesting link. i started computing programming BASIC on an apple II+ many years ago long before todays macs and have used many variations of both windows and mac OS. Realistically the only reason i would use a mac is for final cut pro. i... can't see any other reason for anyone who is tech savy tbh. mac OS has had some pretty serious vulnerabilities the past couple years that for some reason apple just ignored even though they were aware. But what bothers me is the attitude of apple and their company policy of intended "world domination" and the crazy outbursts of mr jobs. i read recently that they wanted iphone and mac os to become the media and info portal for the web via their constrained app system.
This is dangerous as they want to move the web over to a totally "paid for content" system. So think on do you really want a future where you get another bill to pay for your web content payable to apple. Hmm i don't so will stick to PC and avoid iphones like the plague that they are!

Teehee. :Smirk: I did like that article though. I enjoy the fairly detached stance that the author takes.

I agree. Never get in an argument about anything.

I am of the belief, however, that there are people left in the world that can discuss differences of opinion or belief in a civil manner. There don't seem to be too many of those folks in the world anymore, but I sure do try my best to be one of them.

Of course there's always the types that think you have to see it their way or else. I don't see the point in trying to discuss anything with opinionated people like that.
