I have issues when I use Facebook.

Once and a while my facebook home page gets taken over by some other website.

This is the second time, the first time it lasted 2 days

I cleared everything from the browser but it still loads this other web page.

Right now it is loading a page called mapquest, its not the real mapquest but a knock off copy site.

I bought a mac because I thought this stuff diddnt happen on a mac but it seems to.

Is there a way to fix this??

Thanks

It sounds like your URL requests are being redirected to bogus sites. Why that is happening isn't cut and dry, and not necessarily from malware. There are only a couple trojans that exist for OS X, but exist they do. Yet, even then, they are disguised as legitimate software like iLife on sites for pirated software. If you have been pirating software, then there's a good chance you landed a trojan. If you have NOT been pirating software, then it is very very very highly unlikely you have a trojan.

First thing to try for kicks is a Mac antivirus package. iAntivirus only looks for Mac-specific threats, and since they are virtually non-existent, its job is real easy on your system.

If that turns up negative, then you need to revisit your DNS server settings. Have you changed those yourself to some public or "open" DNS server? Done anything with your router's settings? Have you tried using a different web browser?

I agree with member gsahli. It sounds more like it could be the DNS Changer Trojan Horse. Follow the link he gave and let us know if that resolves it for you.

Did any of those video clips ask you to install a player or plugin?

No I have installed no players or codec etc...

My issue has happened twice, 1st time it shut me out of Face Book for 12 hours

This past time it shut me out for 1 hour.

I cant link anything to the two incidents.

I really did not want to get into anti virus software, that is why I bought a MAC.

If it became a problem could I rebuild the machine ?

If you have never downloaded anything other than from the App Store, then you don't have a trojan. The problem is something else. Try using a different browser for a few days (Firefox, Chrome… whatever suits you) and see if the problem continues to occur. If it does continue to occur, then try creating a new user and see if the problem persists when logged in under that user. These steps will help narrow down whether or not you have a system-wide issue, a user issue, or an app issue. I do wonder if this is a Facebook issue. It's not wise to authorize any old Facebook app that wants to… some of the apps on there do go rogue. You may want to go through your Facebook privacy settings and remove every Facebook app for the time being.

It'd also help to know how you are connected to the internet. Do you use a router? What are the DNS settings on your Mac? You can determine this by going to:
System Preferences > Network > (select your connection) > Advanced > DNS.
