I would like to take my new 15 inch Mac Book Pro from 4 megs of gigs to 8 gigs of Ram. Is this something I can do myself? I've added Ram to my pc's without any problems. Also what do I need to purchase and where. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

first off, it would be 8 gigabytes, not megabytes. ;)

secondly, yes. you dont void your warranty upgrading your RAM.

you need a 000 philips head to get the bottom off. make sure you get the right RAM, go to crucial.com and find out the right ram for your system.

Thank you for the quick response. I meant gigs but wrote megs. I hate to admit being old enough to remember if you had a pc with 8 megs of memory and a 40 meg hard drive you were traveling in the fast lane.

Will I be replacing the original memory with two 4 gig boards?

Yes, that's correct. Best performance comes from matched pairs, this enables your memory to run in dual-channel mode.

i have a hunch that this is a new 2011 macbook pro? i think these use slightly faster RAM than last years; they use 1333MHz instead of 1066MHz, youll have to check crucial.

You're right our Mac is one of the new ones and according to Crucial it uses 1333Mhz.

yep, so 2 x 4GB sticks is the way to go. remember to discharge static in your body before changing - i discharge by touching the side of the optical drive.

Thanks for all the information. I ordered 8 gigs of ram from Crucial for 97 dollars with free shipping and it should be next week. I'll post when I go through the install process.

I just added 2 X 4 to my new MBP a couple of days ago. It's a snap.
