Hello. I've been having this issue with my Mac Book for some time now. Pretty much everytime I try and restart or shutdown, it crashes and I have to hold the Startup button to shutdown. I'm on OS 10.6.6. I have posted the crash log below in the hope somebody who understands these complicated things might be able to give me some advice in how I can fix this problem. I have done a bit of searching and it would seem I'm experiencing a Kernal panic that might be caused by a combination of software running in the background when I try and shutdown.

Thankyou in advance - I really appreciate any advice.
Simon

Welcome to the Mac Forums.

Here's where it's crashing at:

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: coreaudiod

The official definition of that process: From 'man coreaudiod':

coreaudiod is a mach_init.d daemon used for CoreAudio related purposes.
This daemon hosts the SystemSoundServer and is used as the Master process for HAL device management. coreaudiod was introduced with OSX version 10.4.

The process that's running in the background is the "coreaudio". Try opening up your Activity Monitor.app and look for the process. If it's eating up the CPU, shut it down. You know your system better than we do, so look for anything that might be tasking the sound system heavily.

Let us know.

Thanks chscag. Coreaudio is a driver for my USB audio interface. It is an MBox made by a company called Digidesign/Avid. It is actually well known to have lots of issues so I kind of half expected it to have something to do with this. Digidesign/Avid are well known for taking two years to react to OS updates.

The problem is is that I need to have this installed as I use my Mac Book to do live shows using this audio interface. Is there anything I can do before shutting down that might stop the crashes?

Thanks again.
Simon

Quit the application using the device and if that by itself does not work, disconnect the Mbox prior to shutting down.

Or wait for 2 years for them to fix it.

While I'm not into this type of equipment, I'm amazed how their stuff is continually recommended as the best around while simultaneously seeing reports over and over again about them taking forever to fix practically any and every issue related to their drivers and software. And how you practically have to stay a minimum of a version behind in the OS if you want their software to work.

Now where have I heard that before? Symantec? :p
