I transferred docx from my friends window to my mac with my ipod. Then whenever I went to work on that docx it closed on me. i tried changing the format a few times but it hasnt helped. It closes even if I don't touch it. It usually takes about 5 minutes and then it closes. It doesn't recover any of the work I have done. Its a big document about 600 pages. It also has some chinese on it, but I have worked on many docx with chinese on them before. I have a regular macbook that is about 3 year old and 2008 word doc.
below are the specifics:

Not sure I totally understand your situation.
If you were (during the five minutes the document stays open) to export it to an RTF file, would it:
1) Successfully complete the export before crashing?
b) Would you be able to open and work with that exported file?

Since you're using MS Word 2008 there should be no need to install an additional filter for an XML document. It sounds like the document may have some corrupt pages or perhaps bad fonts. Transferring it from a Windows machine to your iPod and then to the Mac could have introduced the corruption. Also check the Chinese fonts to make sure they're OK.
