Mine is a MacBook 6,1

I think it was ready for 8 GB RAM dating back to when Apple debuted this model.

I think they are referring to the 5.1 series, the first rendition of the MBP line. The 6.1 is the second version of the unibody line.
This was a problem with the 5.1 where the max you could install was 8gb's, but the max the OS could use was just 6gb's. Now it seems everything "just works!"

I never cared about upgraded from 4gb's to 6 since I would pay for 8 and only get 6, but now I might just do it!

Feel for me. I can pay for 4GB bit can only use 3GB.

Mine is a 7,1 and shares the same RAM as yours. Up to 8Gb too. I just learned this today as I have been researching RAM upgrades for both my MacBook and my iMac.
