I put my iMac to sleep and just now it came out of it by itself and then went back. Has this happened to anyone else and can you tell me what's going on? Is this normal?

I've had this happen to me as well, so you are not alone. I've nearly fallen asleep only to be awaken by a piercing light shining through my eyelids, not fun!
It only happens rarely though. But I do leave a few applications open all the time, none of which repeatedly wake up my mac. Another thing, you might need to consider is what peripherals you might have connected or network activities that may awaken your mac. If it constantly happens, I'd just restart the computer, if it's been awhile, since the last one.
