Is it possible to mod my early 2010 macbook pro 17 to have two hard drives? One SSD for the boot drive and 1 7200 rpm for storage? If so how would I mod it? Thanks!

You can boot from either. Most folks who go that route install a smaller SSD in the optical slot and install OS X on it. The SSD then becomes your primary drive and offers faster boot times and of course faster access to your data and programs.

I think I already know the answer to this but what kind of warranty issues could come from installing an SSD in the optical drive space? I'd like to do it on my mid 2008 machine and my new 2011 machine but I am worried about warranty issues on the 2011.

Thanks

Only Apple can tell you for sure but I suspect it may void the warranty because it would be considered a modification.

As an employee for an apple specialist, we actually had a customer come into the store and have one put in. He called Apple and asked about this specifically and Apple responded by saying, as long as an Apple Specialist or Apple Store puts the SSD in, it is under warranty, otherwise it may be void. I guess the line is very blurred on the subject.
